Pimlico Puffins Invitation Gala Sunday 27th Ocrober 2024

A fantastic performance from our gala team produced a great victory at the Pimlico Puffins Invitation Gala. The team retained the Pimlico Shield that they won for the first time in 2023. Our swimmers won 13 medals with gold medals awarded to Ian Andrew, Shaida and Jeannette.

As ever, the Puffins provided great hospitality, and we were made to feel very welcome and special.

We have formed a close relationship with Pimlico Puffins over the last few years providing a new gala opportunity for us, after so many of our regular invitations never recovered from the Covid break.

Congratulations to all the swimmers who participated on Sunday 27th October and throughout the gala year.

Ruislip Turtles Invitation Gala - 7th September 2024

A very close contest ended with a shared victory between Ruislip Turtles A team and Hatfield Platypus. Hatfield Platypus has now won our Shield, seven times out of the last nine invitation galas. The Turtles B Team finished third.

In total 24 medals were awarded to Turtle swimmers including 10 golds, 4 silver and 10 bronze.

Ryan Orlinska won a gold and a bronze medal, in his first competitive event as did Frankie Patmore in his first invitation gala. Gabby Burbidge returned to the squad and won 2 gold medals.

Shaida Ghorbanian won three medals to strengthen her position at the top of the medal table for 2024.

Special mention to Joe Travers who was the sole representatives from Harrow Kingfisher, but won 3 gold medals.

Unfortunately, Pimlico Puffins encountered terrible travelling problems and missed the first 5 events.

In total, we invited 12 clubs* and it is a sad state of affairs that only 4 other clubs were able to send teams. We are grateful to all the teams and swimmers who made the effort, and a big thank you to all the volunteers who supported us, including the professional photographer Darren     Campbell

It was our first ever gala at Botwell Green and we received good support from the pool staff, and we managed to keep proceedings on schedule.

The next and final event of 2024 will be the Pimlico Puffins Invitation Gala on Sunday 27th October.

Big thank you to the Swimming Teachers’ Association for sponsoring the event that cost the  one thousand pounds to hold.

Special Olympice Gala St. Albans 1st June 2024

Ruislip Turtles took part in the Special Olympics, St. Albans gala on Saturday 1st June. It proved to be something of a marathon, spanning 5 hours. We were the only team participating who were not a Special Olympics Club, so quite naturally, we tended to have the slowest swimmers in most events. We competed against: Plymouth, Reading, Peterborough, Hastings & St. Albans. One chap from Plymouth           completed his 50m Freestyle in 30 seconds…

The swimmers were divided into time banded heats. As most of our swimmers record similar times, it resulted in several of our swimmers competing against other Ruislip Turtles. Medals were awarded, Gold,   Silver, Bronze and finally a Participation medal for each heat. All  swimmers therefore received three medals from their three swans.

For events other than Freestyle, there were stringent rules, and failure to meet the requirements of the stroke resulted in disqualification. We suffered three DQs, we also suffered several ‘repositionings’ for           exceeding the tolerances allowed for ‘maximum effort rules’ (performing substantially better than their submitted time).

Well done to all of our swimmers for a great performance on Saturday.

It was a good experience and an education for us all.

Special mention again to Josh. Josh won the Butterfly competition and he was also in the top heat for the 100 metres Freestyle where he won silver. Josh also won his 50 metres Freestyle heat, had he been entered into the top heat, Josh would have won the Bronze!

Now that is impressive!
